Wallace edges Knowles on final lap at Talladega
EASTABOGA, Ala. (April 26) — It appeared that rain and threatening weather might be the only thing to stop Tony Knowles from notching his first career O'Reilly Southern All Star Series victory on NASCAR weekend at Talladega Short Track. But with a last-lap pass, it turned out fellow front-row starter Wendell Wallace, a former Dirt Track World Champion, denied the Tyrone, Ga., victory his biggest career victory. Wallace pocketed $5,000 on a night when rain twice delayed racing action and pushed the start of the feature past midnight. |

Colossal: Foes can't stop Francis in 100-lapper
There was simply no stopping Steve Francis in Saturday night’s Circle K Colossal 100 at the Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. With a flawless performance behind the wheel of Dale Beitler’s Reliable Painting/Valvoline Rocket No. 19, Francis dominated the entire distance to score his first career win in the $200,000 World of Outlaws Late Model Series event.
“The car was just absolutely phenomenal tonight,” said Francis, who earned $50,000 for breaking Scott Bloomquist’s two-year ownership of victory lane in the blockbuster race. “We never even had to run a lap hard. We had a lot left if we needed to go. That’s just unbelievable to get a car that good against this level of competition.”

Race results: January 31 - February 2, 2008
Thursday - Saturday, Jan. 31 - Feb. 2, 2008 - ASCS Winternationals, Tampa, FL
The Inside Scoop:
The 2008 race season started off with a bang! Bobbi and I made our way back from Australia, landed in the good ole USA on Tuesday and met up with The Shop Motorsports team on Wednesday in Tampa, FL, to go over the car and get a little practice in. It's good to be home!
Racing action kicked off Thursday for the 2008 Winternationals and the first night of the ASCS National Tour Point Series. We started 3rd in the 4th heat and ran 2nd, just behind Kenny Adams. Our 12th place starting spot in the feature was not what we had hoped for, but we worked up to 6th and were pleased with a top 10 finish, especially since we had a little trouble with the smaller right rear tire.
Friday's action had us starting 5th in the 4th heat, finishing 2nd. The top 8 cars redrew for the A Feature starting spot, so we started in the 7th position. We were pleased with our 2nd place finish. I chased Terry McCarl, but the feature was a green to checker and the opportunity to get a win just wasn't there.
Thursday and Friday's action left us in a great position - 2nd in Winternational points and starting the main event on Saturday on the outside front row. I can now tell you what a perfect race car feels like; the team had The Shop Motorsports/ King Racing/ Pope Transportation/ Custom Equipment Designs #41 dialed in! She was sweet! When the green flag dropped I surged past Gary Wright and took off to lead all 40 laps. The feature did have three cautions, the last one on lap 30. The last 10 laps were fun as I had 5 lapped cars between us and 2nd place.
Great victory to start off the year and very pleased to win the Ronald Laney Memorial race. Ronald was someone I looked up to as a kid and it was an honor to win the race.
Special thanks to a great bunch of sponsors and friends that made the trek to Florida for the race: David and Joy, Pope Transportation; Chuck and Justin, CED, Inc. Also, it was great to have Dad and Uncle
James with us too.
Overall, just a great weekend! Bobbi and I are happy to be back!

Opening-Lap Surge Propels Babb To Fourth Win Of '07 Saturday At Hagerstown Speedway
Shannon Babb has proven to be a quick study on the 2007 World of Outlaws Late Model Series.
With his flag-to-flag victory in Saturday night’s 26th annual ‘Conococheague 50’ at Hagerstown Speedway, the Moweaqua, Ill., star was triumphant in his first career start at a track for the third time on this year’s tour.
Babb, 33, didn’t exactly expect his latest WoO LMS success, however.
“We didn’t have our hopes up real high coming in here,” said Babb, who previously won WoO LMS events in his first-ever visits to Virginia Motor Speedway (April 14) and Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. (April 17). “I talked to (three-time WoO LMS champ) Billy (Moyer) and a couple other guys during the week and they said we’d probably be in trouble (finding a comfortable setup), so I knew we had to change a lot of things to make our car suitable for the racetrack.

Winner Austin Dillon with Grandfather Richard Childress
It seemed as if history sort of “stood still” for a moment, at the Lowes Motor Speedway Dirt Track this past Friday night, as the FASTRAK Late Model series came to town. The “Goodyear-FASTRAK Challenge” was about to prove itself ”fan worthy” once and for all in front of a “sold out” crowd of more than 14,000 fans. Although the Woo sprints were intended to be the “main attraction” the FASTRAK Late Models won the hearts of the fans. A few fans might have left after the sprint main event, but the 11,000 plus that stayed, witnessed the best race of their lives, as many fans said afterwards.,
Austin Dillon, son of Mike Dillon and grandson of Richard Childress, took the checkers for his first ever dirt late model win. Childress was quoted in Victory Lane as saying “folks, this is REAL racing. I don't think I've been any more nervous trying to win the Daytona 500," Childress said with pride. "Seeing the black No. 3 back up there and my family running it, it's just great. He did a great job tonight and I'm proud of Austin."

Clint Smith Cools Off Babb With Powerful Victory At Kamp Motor Speedway
Clint Smith registered a pretty satisfying victory in Saturday night’s ‘Boswell Brawl 50’ at Kamp Motor Speedway.
With his first World of Outlaws Late Model Series win of the 2007 season, Smith cooled off the streaking Shannon Babb, got some revenge on his good buddy Chris Madden and regained a share of the tour points lead.
“It was a great night for us on a great track,” bottom-lined Smith, a 42-year-old veteran from Senoia, Ga. “This was our first time racing here, and all I can say is this was one racy track.”
Smith, who started second, outgunned the polesitting Babb for the lead at the initial green flag and never looked back. He survived two late-race caution flags to record his seventh career WoO LMS win by about three car lengths over Gray Court, S.C.’s Madden, whose final-lap bid between turns three and four fell short.

Red-Hot Babb Gives Locals Something To Cheer About In World of Outlaws Late Model Series Event At Farmer City Raceway
Shannon Babb gave the locals what they came to see.
The Moweaqua, Ill., native defended his home turf well on Friday night, scoring a powerful flag-to-flag victory in the ‘Farmer City 50’ at the venerable Farmer City Raceway.
It was the third win in the last four World of Outlaws Late Model Series events for Babb, who departed Farmer City – a quarter-mile fairgrounds oval at which he raced often early in his career – with sole possession of the tour points lead.
“It’s always nice to win close to home,” said Babb, who is the only repeat winner this season through eight WoO LMS A-Mains. “When it’s a big show, it’s even better.”
Babb dominated the feature, blasting off the outside pole to lead the entire distance in his Car City/J&J Steel Rayburn No. 18. He was fast enough to stay a step ahead of three-time WoO LMS champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., who made a late bid but settled for second place in his Banner Valley Hauling Rayburn No. 21.

The inside scoop:
On Friday we ran the ASCS Coastal Regional race in Hattiesburg, MS. We had a good night, finishing with a clean sweep. We started the heat 4th and won it; started the dash 2nd and won it then sat on the pole for the feature and brought the checkered flag home. It was a fun night and our second feature win in a row.
Saturday night we hoped to continue the streak. We got off to a good start; we started the heat in the 4th position and won it. We started the dash 6th and worked up to 3rd; the same position from where we started the feature. Once the green flag dropped I found the grove and waved good bye. Around lap 18 while maneuvering lapped cars I got held up and lost the lead but did hold on to the number two spot.
This weekend we are off to two ASCS national point races: Texarkana on Friday and Little Rock on Saturday. Come see us if you are in the neighborhood otherwise stop by our web site when you can.

Babb Perfect At Lernerville
Shannon Babb didn’t begin the 2007 season with a plan to chase the 360 OTC World of Outlaws Late Model Series championship.
But after making Tuesday night’s 50-lap ‘Showdown in Sarvertown’ at Lernerville Speedway his second straight victory on the tour, Babb just might have to consider becoming a WoO regular for the first time in his career.
Babb, 32, of Moweaqua, Ill., not only became the first repeat winner in six events on this year’s 360 OTC WoO LMS, but also vaulted into a tie for the tour points lead with Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga.
“My plans right now are kind of iffy,” said Babb, whose third career 360 OTC WoO LMS triumph came just three days after he won at Virginia Motor Speedway. “I’d like to run the (UMP DIRTcar Racing) Summernationals, but I’ve done that a couple times and won it (in 2005 and 2006), so it may be time for me to move on.
“I’m confident my car is right and we have the equipment to do this (Outlaws) deal,” he continued. “And I usually have a good last half of the season, so if I’m up in the points (after more 360 OTC WoO LMS events), we’re gonna strongly think about (competing for the title).”
